Lingerie company makes dying teen's last heartbreaking wish come true with beautiful photoshoot
Eva McGauley has one wish - to create a world where she feels safe leaving her
loved ones.
At an age where many of her peers are enjoying their adolescence , Eva is facing
up to the fact she does not have long left to live.
In 2015, 17 year-old Eva was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
Nasopharyngeal cancer affects the upper throat area behind the
nose. Initially Eva believed it was glandular fever. The New Zealand teen had to
undergo gruelling chemotherapy and radiation therapy sessions, eventually being
given the good news she was in remission.Three weeks later, however,
the rug was pulled from under her feet."They said they had got it wrong... and
actually showed that [the cancer] was terminal," Eva tells the NZ Herald . Out of
the shattering news, Eva's Wish was created.Eva had been horrified by how
recurrent instances of sexual assault had become - in New Zealand alone one in
three girls and one in seven boys may be sexually abused before the age of 16.
It was witnessing her friends having to deal with the aftermath which galvanised
her into action.
"I read the statistics and thought they were terrible but for me, when the statistics
stopped being numbers and started actually being my friends I realised how big
of an issue [sexual assault] was," said Eva.
"I wanted to do anything I could to help."In July 2016, Eva began raising money
for HELP, an Auckland-based not-for-profit organisation that helps women and
children recovering from the effects of sexual assault, on Givealittle .
Then lingerie brand Lonely offered Eva the chance to appear in a photoshoot and
promised to donate all proceeds from online and instore sales today June 29
(launch day) to Eva's Wish.So far Eva has raised over an incredible £30,000.
Lonely's co-founder Helene Morris has high hopes the photoshoot and money
raised would lead to greater awareness, support and education.
"Eva is our ultimate inspiration. Choosing to spend her time trying to make a
positive difference in people's lives is incredibly admirable.
